Retinoblastoma

DEFINITION
Retinoblastoma is an inherited, highly malignant, congenital neoplasm arising from the neural layers of the retina.


PHYSICAL FINDINGS AND CLINICAL PRESENTATION
● White pupils
● White elevated retinal masses, dilated, tortuous, retinal blood vessels
● Strabismus
● Glaucoma
● Uveitis
● Vitreous masses and opacity


CAUSE
● Genetic

IMAGING STUDIES
● MRI: may show calcifi cations in the retina
● Ultrasonography: good delineation of mass


TREATMENT
Treatment depends on location and stage of tumor when diagnosed.
● Enucleation of single eye
● External beam radiation
● Chemotherapy with local vitreous injections
● Radioactive plaque brachytherapy and cryotherapy
● Surgical enucleation of the eye
● Radiation and chemotherapy

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS
● Strabismus
● Retinal detachment
● Uveitis
● Glaucoma
● Cataract
